The Art of Gift Giving
Before you decide on a gift, think about the recipients and consider the way you would like them to react to your gift and to you as a person. Consider the context, occasion and timing as you think through the message you want to send. Here are some questions to help you determine what is the best way to package your message: Ask yourself, do you want to create a fun reaction? If so think about the things they find funny and get them a gift that will make them laugh. Gag gifts are an excellent choice but sometimes simple items in the right context can be funny. If you want them to know that you care about them and their needs then sometimes functional gifts are best. Think of a need that they have and consider a gift that meets their needs. Maybe you want them to feel important? If so take out your checkbook and think of something extravagant and make sure it is expensive. Just kidding! Well, sort of. Sometimes rare and creative can compensate for cost; creative gifts can have the same effect as an expensive one. If you want to give someone a gift that will help them to think of you, get to know you or your business, corporate gifts are very appropriate. Think of a gift that is a metaphor that represents you or your business. Sometimes an invitation to an event or some other opportunity to know more about you is an excellent gesture in this context too.
Don’t forget to ask yourself, what is the best way to package and deliver your gift? Are you mailing it, hand delivering it, shooting it out of a cannon, wrapping it in aluminum foil, craft paper or a big shiny bow? Delivery matters too and can serve as a way to really underline your message. In other words, when you give a gift, put some thought into every detail because it “is” true what they say; It is the thought that counts.
